Joint Pain

Treatments Offered For Joint Pain

Facets are joints located in your spine that can cause morning stiffness and discomfort. Pain from facets is usually worse when being still, twisting or turning, or in bad weather. If facet joint pain is in the early stages, it can oftentimes be treated by physical therapy or physician guided exercises.  If those treatments do not help with the pain, or if Facet Joint Pain is in the more advanced stages, there are a couple options.

These treatment options include using anti-inflammatory medications and blocking small sensory nerves. There are minimally invasive treatment options for facet joint pain that can provide you with similar or even better pain relief than surgical options. This procedure may relieve pain by blocking the pain signal. This safe treatment is one of the possible options.

What Causes Joint Pain?

Facet joints are located on either side of the back of the spine to limit and guide how the spine moves. These joints provide flexibility in your back that keeps you from over flexing or overextending the joints. Twisting and bending is controlled by the facet joints. The facet joints are categorized into three sections relating to the different areas of your spine - thoracic, lumbar, and cervical. As time goes on, injury or arthritis can have an impact on your joints causing damage, inflammation, and excruciating pain.

Injury or inflammation to the joint is a common cause of neck and back pain. This is known as Facet Joint Syndrome, facet joint sprain or facet joint pain. It can be caused by cartilage in the facet joint wearing down making the bone create bone spurs. This causes rubbing and scraping of the joints which causes inflammation. If left untreated, this inflammation can trigger muscle spasms near the spine causing the spine to bend affecting the patient’s back and spine health as well as posture.
